Nancy, In The Spotlight |
We're a small group of people with various 'special needs,'
conditions and challenges such as Down Syndrome, and cerebral palsy,
sitting in a circle, passing percussion instruments around,
taking turns playing, quite informally, just getting acquainted with
the sounds and each other, certainly not 'performing.'
That is, until it's Nancy's turn.
She takes the tambourine, or maracas,
rises from her chair, moves to the center,
transforming it into a stage,
hushes chit-chat with a forbidding glance,
concentrates by gazing into the distance,
as if transfixed by her Muse:
imperious as any virtuoso,
transforming it into a stage,
as poised as a prima donna,
a diva enthralling her audience,
before she even makes a sound
